The Garmin inReach Mini 2 belongs in an overland plan when the route may take you beyond reliable cell service and you want two-way satellite messaging and SOS capability. Garmin says those communication functions require an active subscription. Buying the device and leaving it inactive in a glove box does not provide the emergency function you may expect.
Give each device one job
The inReach is a communication layer, not a substitute for studying the route. A Garmin GPSMAP 65 handheld is a separate navigation option with multi-band positioning and preloaded mapping in the U.S. version. Check the exact regional model and map coverage before relying on it. Keep a downloaded or paper map backup, and confirm which roads and land-access rules are current; a line on a screen does not grant permission to drive it.
A Midland MXT275 GMRS mobile radio serves a different purpose: talking with nearby vehicles that carry compatible radios. Terrain and line of sight affect range, and GMRS operation in the United States requires the appropriate license. A local radio does not replace satellite messaging when your group is separated beyond radio range.

Test the communication chain before leaving
Activate the plan, add contacts, send a non-emergency test message as Garmin instructs, and practice using the device with a clear view of the sky. Tell a trusted contact where you plan to go and when they should expect an update. Garmin advises testing the Mini 2 before using it outdoors; an SOS is for a real emergency, not a routine system check.
The Anker 737 power bank can be part of a charging plan for compatible devices, but check the required cable, ports and power specifications rather than assuming every device charges the same way. Keep the communication device accessible and charged, not packed beneath camp gear. The right plan is a working subscription, a mapped route, a contact who knows the plan, and a backup for one failed device. If you also plan to record the route, keep that separate from the communication plan; our action-camera kit addresses mounting, batteries and file backup.
